As China's annual Two Sessions political meetings continue in Beijing, Shanghai Ballet Artistic Director Xin Lili has spotlighted the role of cultural institutions in fostering social development through art. During a March 10 panel discussion with CPPCC members from cultural sectors, Xin outlined her troupe's decade-long commitment to public welfare programs that make ballet accessible to all.
Bridging Art and Community
Xin revealed that the company conducted 127 free performances and workshops in 2025 alone, reaching over 50,000 residents across the Chinese mainland. "Our theater doors must swing open wider – not just for applause, but for participation," she told CGTN reporter Yang Yan during the exchange.
Educational Outreach Expands
The ballet company recently launched a digital education portal offering free choreography courses and live-streamed rehearsals. This year's initiatives include partnerships with rural schools in Jiangxi and Anhui provinces to establish after-school dance programs.
A Model for Cultural Diplomacy
While maintaining artistic excellence through productions like The White-Haired Girl, the troupe has become a case study in cultural soft power. International collaborations with Paris Opera Ballet and Australian Ballet scheduled for late 2026 will incorporate joint community outreach components.
