Window Paper-Cuts: Blossoming Traditions of Spring Festival 2026

As the 2026 Lunar New Year approaches, vibrant window paper-cuts are adorning homes across the Chinese mainland, transforming ordinary windows into canvases of hope and renewal. Known as chuāng huā (window flowers), these intricate designs are far more than festive decor—they are cultural vessels carrying centuries of symbolism.

At the Tsinghua University Art Museum’s Spring Across Heaven and Earth, Blessings within Homes exhibition, visitors explore how patterns like peonies (prosperity), fish (abundance), and zodiac animals weave familial aspirations into art. "Each cut is a silent prayer for the year ahead," explains curator Li Wei, highlighting how the tradition bridges generations.

While modern life has introduced new materials, the essence remains: paper-cuts turn winter’s austerity into a celebration of resilience. A companion video series delves into regional styles, from Shaanxi’s bold motifs to Fujian’s delicate layered scenes, revealing why this art form remains central to Lunar New Year preparations.
