Renowned artist Shan Ze, celebrated for his ethereal portrayals of ancient Chinese mythology, has unveiled a captivating artistic challenge this week. The painter, whose real name is Li Yifan, invites global art enthusiasts to recreate Jiliang – a divine horse from the Classic of Mountains and Seas – using only a single unbroken line.
Where Art Meets Ancient Wisdom
Drawing from the Shan Hai Jing's rich tapestry of mythical creatures, Shan Ze demonstrated his technique during a live workshop in Beijing on January 22. The session showcased how flowing brushstrokes can capture both the physical majesty and spiritual symbolism of the luck-bringing Jiliang.
Cross-Cultural Creative Opportunity
This initiative forms part of the ongoing "All Things Horses" cultural project, which has gained particular relevance as 2026 marks the Year of the Horse in the Chinese zodiac cycle. Art teachers across Asia have begun incorporating the challenge into their curricula, noting its value in teaching both technical skill and mythological context.
"The single-line method forces us to see the subject as a complete entity," Shan Ze explained during the demonstration. "Just as the ancients viewed Jiliang as an indivisible symbol of fortune, we must conceive our artwork holistically before the first stroke."
