Tokyo’s Beloved Panda Twins Set for Return to China This Month

Tokyo's Ueno Zoo announced today that twin giant pandas Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei will depart Japan on January 27, 2026, marking the end of their five-year stay that captivated millions of visitors. The siblings will make their final public appearance on January 25 before beginning their journey to the Chinese mainland.

Born in 2021 through a China-Japan conservation partnership, the pandas became cultural ambassadors symbolizing cross-border cooperation. Zoo Director Takashi Saito noted: "Their growth has inspired new generations about wildlife preservation. While we're saddened by their departure, we understand this fulfills our bilateral agreement."

The return coincides with renewed focus on China's panda diplomacy program, which currently has over 60 bears loaned worldwide. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson stated: "We welcome our national treasures home while remaining committed to global biodiversity initiatives."

Analysts suggest the pandas' transfer could precede new cultural exchanges, with Japan's Environment Ministry confirming ongoing discussions about future collaborative projects. Travelers planning final visits should note extended viewing hours scheduled for January 24-25.
