The organizing committee for the 2025 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting has unveiled a logo steeped in history, drawing inspiration from the iconic "Silla Smile" – a 1,000-year-old artifact symbolizing Gyeongju’s cultural legacy. The design aims to bridge ancient heritage with modern diplomacy as South Korea prepares to host global leaders in October-November 2025.
The logo’s centerpiece, the "Roof-end Tile with Human Face Motif," was discovered in Gyeongju during early 20th-century excavations. Now housed at the Gyeongju National Museum, the artifact represents the Silla Kingdom’s artistic achievements and serves as a visual metaphor for cross-cultural dialogue. Organizers emphasized the smile’s universal appeal, reflecting APEC’s mission of fostering economic cooperation across 21 member economies.
Gyeongju, often called "the museum without walls," offers a strategic backdrop for discussions on sustainable growth and digital innovation. Analysts note the choice underscores South Korea’s efforts to position itself as a hub connecting Asia’s past and future. The event is expected to address supply chain resilience, clean energy transitions, and inclusive trade policies.
