Xinjiang’s Star Street Blends Music, Books, and Community Spirit

When musician Shafqat returned to his hometown of Yining City in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region after years in Beijing, he brought more than just his instruments. In 2022, he transformed Liuxing Street—locally known as "Star Street"—into a vibrant cultural hub, merging a bookstore, restaurant, bar, and live music stage under one roof.

Shafqat's vision? To foster a creative community where young artists collaborate and innovate. "This space isn’t just about performances or books—it’s about connection," he explains. The venue has become a magnet for artists, writers, and residents of Yining, offering a dynamic blend of Uygur traditions and contemporary art.

Located in the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, Yining has long been a crossroads of cultures. Shafqat’s project amplifies this legacy, providing a platform for cross-disciplinary dialogue. Local artists now host weekly jam sessions, poetry readings, and art exhibitions, drawing visitors from across the region.

For business professionals and travelers, Star Street’s revival highlights Xinjiang’s growing cultural economy. Academics note its role in preserving regional heritage while embracing modernity—a balance resonating with global trends in creative placemaking.

As dusk falls on Star Street, the hum of conversations blends with live music, embodying Shafqat’s belief: "Culture thrives where people gather."
