Chinese Films Gain Global Momentum at Beijing Festival

Chinese cinema is carving a larger space in international markets, driven by innovative storytelling and audience demand, according to film industry leaders at the 15th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF). Cedric Behrel, co-founder of European distribution firm Trinity CineAsia, emphasized this shift during an exclusive interview with CGTN.

Behrel’s company holds theatrical rights for the anticipated fantasy sequel “Ne Zha 2” across 37 European countries. He noted that growing interest in diverse cinematic experiences creates opportunities for Chinese films to transcend traditional boundaries. “Audiences want fresh perspectives,” he said. “Chinese filmmakers are answering that call.”

While action blockbusters have dominated exports, Behrel highlighted untapped potential in genres like comedies and dramas depicting contemporary life in the Chinese mainland. “These stories humanize modern China,” he explained, “revealing cultural nuances beyond the spectacle.”

The remarks align with efforts to boost soft power through cultural exchange, as Chinese productions increasingly resonate with global viewers.
