Beijing Zoo Snakes Draw Crowds Ahead of Lunar New Year Celebrations

They hiss and flick their forked tongues as they slither through their enclosures. Amid the chill of Beijing’s winter, these cold-blooded creatures twirl comfortably in a humidity-controlled hall. Yet they are probably unaware of the approaching Chinese New Year celebrations that will prominently feature their image.

As the Year of the Snake approaches, Beijing Zoo’s serpentine residents are becoming unexpected stars. Visitors flock to the zoo’s reptile house, eager to catch a glimpse of pythons, boa constrictors, cobras, and other snake species that reside at the facility in Beijing’s Xicheng District.

“The number of visitors has noticeably increased,” says a zookeeper at the reptile house. “Many people are curious about snakes, especially this year.”

In Chinese culture, the snake is a symbol of wisdom, mystery, and intuition. The upcoming Lunar New Year festivities bring a spotlight to these often misunderstood creatures.

Families stroll through the hall, children pressing their faces against the glass to watch a python coil around a branch. “I used to be afraid of snakes,” admits one visitor. “But seeing them up close, I realize they are fascinating animals.”

The zoo has taken measures to ensure the well-being of both the animals and the visitors. Information panels have been set up to educate the public about the various snake species, their habitats, and behaviors.

“We hope to dispel some myths and fears people have about snakes,” the zookeeper adds. “They play an important role in nature, and understanding them can lead to greater appreciation and conservation efforts.”

As Beijing prepares to usher in the Year of the Snake, the zoo’s reptile house offers a unique opportunity for people to connect with the symbolic animal of the year.

Whether out of cultural interest or sheer curiosity, the influx of visitors signifies a growing fascination with snakes. As the Lunar New Year draws near, Beijing Zoo’s slithering stars are basking in the attention, unaware of the immense cultural significance they hold in the hearts of the people.
