UCCA Clay Opens to Reimagine Yixing’s 7,000-Year Ceramic Legacy

Yixing, known as China’s “City of Ceramics,” witnessed a new chapter in its rich history as UCCA Clay opened its doors on October 19. The museum’s inaugural exhibition, “The Ways of Clay”, invites visitors to explore the fusion of ancient traditions and contemporary art.

Designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, UCCA Clay is a masterpiece that seamlessly blends with Yixing’s 7,000-year-old ceramic heritage. The museum’s terracotta façade, inspired by the form of an ancient dragon kiln, stands as a bold testament to the city’s enduring legacy of craftsmanship.

As the fourth institution under the UCCA banner in China, UCCA Clay serves as a bridge connecting audiences from Yixing, Jiangsu Province, and beyond to the dynamic world of ceramic art. The museum aims to foster a deeper appreciation for ceramics, showcasing the evolution of techniques and the innovative spirit that continues to fuel the art form.

Visitors can expect an immersive experience where tradition meets innovation, highlighting both the historical significance and the future possibilities of ceramics. UCCA Clay not only honors Yixing’s past but also reimagines its legacy for new generations of artists and enthusiasts worldwide.
