What does China look like through the eyes of a child? For 10-year-old Chen Shiyue from Germany, it’s a vibrant tapestry of culture, history, and personal connections. Inspired by her two visits to the Chinese mainland and the rich stories shared by her mother, Chen poured her affection into a heartfelt painting titled “I Love China.”
Using colored pencils, Chen wrote “I Love China” in Chinese characters at the center of her artwork. Surrounding this declaration are iconic symbols that represent the diversity and beauty of China: giant pandas, the Great Wall, the Tian’anmen Gate Tower, the Oriental Pearl Tower, red lanterns, a pipa, and various snacks. The soft hues and balanced composition give the piece a warm and inviting feel, reflecting her genuine admiration.
This expressive work earned Chen the Third Prize in the “China Through My Eyes” Global Children’s Art Project. The competition celebrates the perspectives of young artists worldwide, showcasing their interpretations of Chinese culture and fostering cross-cultural understanding.
Chen’s piece not only highlights the landmarks and traditions that define China but also serves as a bridge connecting different cultures through the innocent and profound vision of a child.
