China’s Ministry of Education has unveiled a new initiative to ensure that primary and middle school students engage in at least two hours of physical activities each day. The announcement aims to promote healthier lifestyles among young learners across the nation.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Vice Minister of Education Wang Jiayi stated that students will participate in one sports class daily and an additional hour of physical exercise after school. “This move is intended to address common eye and weight problems among students by ensuring they have sufficient exposure to sunshine,” Wang explained.
In alignment with this national initiative, Beijing has extended the break between classes for compulsory education from 10 minutes to 15 minutes starting this autumn semester. The Municipal Education authorities highlighted that the decision provides both teachers and students with ample time to rest and encourages students to spend time outdoors.
“Extending break times not only enhances physical well-being but also supports the mental health of our students,” a spokesperson from the Beijing education department commented. “We are committed to creating an educational environment that balances academic rigor with physical activity.”
The enhanced focus on physical education reflects China’s broader commitment to improving the health and wellness of its younger generations. By integrating more exercise into the daily school routine, officials hope to instill lifelong healthy habits and combat the rising concerns of sedentary lifestyles among youth.
Parents and educators nationwide have welcomed the initiative, recognizing the benefits of increased physical activity on students’ overall development. As schools implement these changes, China sets a proactive example in prioritizing student health within the educational system.
