Yang Kai, a 28-year-old artisan from Pingliang City in Gansu Province, has breathed new life into ancient art forms by creating a mesmerizing collection of dough sculptures. Drawing inspiration from the vivid murals of the Yulin Caves, Yang spent a year meticulously crafting 30 intricate figures that capture the essence of the ancient artwork.
The sculptures are a testament to Yang’s dedication to preserving the cultural heritage of Kongtong dough sculpture, a traditional art form passed down through generations. Located in Guazhou County, Gansu, the Yulin Caves are home to over 5,200 square meters of breathtaking murals and more than 259 painted sculptures spread across 43 caves. These caves are part of the esteemed “Dunhuang Caves” artistic complex, which also includes the renowned Mogao Caves, celebrated worldwide for their historical and cultural significance.
