Lantern Magic Lights Up Kunming: Yunnan’s Largest Mid-Autumn Festival Illumination

Kunming’s Daguan Park in southwest China’s Yunnan Province recently transformed into a luminous wonderland, as it hosted the largest Mid-Autumn lantern exhibition ever held in the region. The grand lantern show, meticulously crafted by over 500 artisans over 40 days, illuminated the night with over 10,000 decorative lanterns.

The exhibition featured five themed sections, showcasing 64 stunning lantern-set displays and illuminated spots. Each lantern told a story, highlighting Yunnan’s rich cultural heritage. Among the captivating designs were representations of Ashima, a renowned folk tale from the Yi Autonomous County in Shilin, and intricate displays of “inside painting,” an intangible cultural heritage craft where artists skillfully paint inside tiny bottles.

Visitors strolled through the park, immersed in a feast for the eyes. The combination of traditional craftsmanship and innovative designs offered a rare visual experience, celebrating both the Mid-Autumn Festival and Yunnan’s unique cultural identity.

This extraordinary event not only illuminated the night but also shone a light on the dedication of the artisans and the enduring appeal of cultural traditions. It provided an enchanting atmosphere that resonated with locals and tourists alike, fostering a deeper appreciation for the region’s history and artistry.
