In an inspiring display of resilience and cultural celebration, Paris’ first women’s dragon boat team, composed mainly of breast cancer survivors, participated in the Olympic torch relay for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The team, established in 2016, has been practicing weekly for the past eight years, mastering the art of this traditional Chinese water sport.

Dragon boat racing, featured as a demonstration sport at the 2024 Olympics, provided a unique platform for the team to showcase their strength and unity. Led by team leader Carole, the women have not only conquered the physical challenges of the sport but have also navigated the personal battles associated with cancer recovery.

Carole designed the team’s emblem—a logo entwining dragons and phoenixes—to symbolize their journey of overcoming pain and rising anew. “The dragon represents strength and the phoenix signifies rebirth,” she explained. “Together, they reflect our collective spirit of resilience and hope.”

Participating in the torch relay was a momentous occasion for the team. “We are proud to represent Chinese culture in Paris,” said one team member. “This year marks a milestone in France-China relations, and we are honored to be a part of it.”

The team’s presence at the Olympics not only highlights the growing popularity of dragon boat racing but also underscores the universal themes of perseverance and cultural exchange. Their story resonates with audiences around the world, inspiring individuals from all walks of life.
