BRICS Young Poets Unite at the Great Wall for Cultural Exchange

Amid the sweltering summer heat, dozens of young poets from BRICS countries gathered at the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall in Beijing on Tuesday, united by their shared love of poetry. The monumental setting provided a breathtaking backdrop for cultural exchange and artistic expression.

The first International Youth Poetry Festival’s Special Session for BRICS Countries is taking place from July 19 to 24 in Hangzhou and Beijing, bringing together 49 poets from Brazil, Russia, India, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and Ethiopia, alongside 23 Chinese poets. The festival aims to foster friendship through poetry and promote cultural exchange among young people from diverse backgrounds.

During their visit to the Great Wall’s Mutianyu section, the poets read their original works in their native languages, creating a tapestry of voices that transcended borders. Shi Zhanjun, party group member and secretary of the Secretariat of the China Writers Association (CWA), attended the event and delivered a speech emphasizing the historical significance of the gathering.

“These young poets have built a beautiful channel for civilization exchanges and mutual learning through poetry and their youth, and built a ‘Great Wall of Poetry’ that will always be remembered,” Shi said, highlighting the unique convergence of cultures at the ancient site.

The festival not only celebrates poetic talent but also serves as a platform for dialogue and understanding among nations. By sharing their literary works, the young poets are forging connections that may influence future collaborations and deepen mutual appreciation of each other’s cultures.

The International Youth Poetry Festival continues in Hangzhou and Beijing, with further events and readings scheduled throughout the week. As the poets explore new cities and engage in cultural activities, they carry with them the spirit of unity and the transformative power of poetry.
