Digitization Revolutionizes Heritage Preservation in Abu Dhabi

At the International Symposium on Cultural Heritage Conservation by Digitization in Beijing, the importance of digital technology in preserving cultural heritage took center stage. Ona Vileikis, Secretary-General of the International Committee for Documentation of Cultural Heritage (CIPA) and Head for the Historic Environment at the Department of Culture and Tourism of Abu Dhabi, shared insights into how digitization is revolutionizing the preservation of Abu Dhabi’s cultural sites.

“Digital technology allows us to document our heritage with unprecedented accuracy,” Vileikis explained. “By creating detailed digital records, we not only safeguard our historical sites against potential loss but also make them accessible to a global audience.”

Abu Dhabi, rich in cultural landmarks, has embraced digitization to ensure that its heritage is preserved for future generations. The use of 3D scanning, virtual reality, and other advanced technologies enables detailed documentation and virtual exploration of sites that might be otherwise inaccessible.

Vileikis highlighted how these digital efforts are not only preserving heritage but also enhancing tourism. “When people can experience our heritage sites virtually, it piques their interest and encourages them to visit in person,” she said. “Digital engagement is a bridge connecting global audiences to our rich cultural tapestry.”

The symposium in Beijing brought together experts from around the world to discuss the growing role of digitization in cultural preservation. Abu Dhabi’s initiatives serve as a model for how technology can be harnessed to protect and promote heritage in the modern age.

As the world becomes increasingly digital, the integration of technology into heritage conservation offers new opportunities. “It’s about enhancing accessibility and education,” Vileikis concluded. “We are committed to using digital tools to share our heritage with the world while preserving it for the generations to come.”
