Ukrainian-born Russian PhD Student Highlights Youth’s Role in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization
As the 24th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) commences in Astana, Kazakhstan, discussions surrounding regional stability and cooperation are at the forefront. Russia, a pivotal member of the SCO and other multilateral organizations like BRICS, plays a significant role in these dialogues.
Among the many voices contributing to these discussions is Ukrainian-born Russian PhD student Melissa Baidak, currently studying at Beijing Foreign Studies University. In an insightful interview with CGTN’s Enoch Wong, Baidak shared her unique perspective on the importance of youth engagement within the SCO and its member states.
A Journey from Ukraine to Russia
Born in Ukraine and later moving to Russia, Baidak’s personal journey mirrors the complex tapestry of Eurasian relations. Her academic pursuit in China signifies a bridging of cultures and underscores the potential for cooperation among nations. “Growing up in a region rich with diverse cultures, I have always been fascinated by the dynamics of international relations,” she remarked.
The Youth as Catalysts for Change
Baidak emphasized the crucial role that young people play in fostering mutual understanding and collaboration within the SCO framework. “Youth are the future leaders and innovators. Our perspectives can drive forward-thinking policies that address contemporary challenges,” she stated. She believes that empowering young individuals to participate in diplomatic and cultural exchanges can strengthen ties between member countries.
Educational Exchanges and Cultural Understanding
Studying in China has provided Baidak with firsthand experience of cross-cultural engagement. She highlighted the importance of educational programs that allow students from SCO countries to study abroad. “These opportunities not only enhance our academic knowledge but also help us appreciate different cultures and build lifelong connections,” Baidak explained.
Looking Ahead: Cooperation and Development
As the SCO summit progresses, Baidak hopes that member states will continue to invest in youth-oriented initiatives. She advocates for more platforms where young people can contribute ideas on economic development, security, and cultural exchange. “Our generation has the energy and creativity to address issues like digital innovation and sustainable development,” she noted.
Baidak’s insights reflect a growing recognition of the impact that engaged and informed youth can have on international cooperation. Her journey from Ukraine to Russia, and now China, embodies the spirit of collaboration that the SCO seeks to promote.
With voices like hers, the future of the region looks promising, as young leaders step forward to shape policies and strengthen bonds among nations.
