Shanghai recently played host to a vibrant celebration of Latin American culture during the Belt and Road Film Week, a segment of this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF). From June 15 to 18, film enthusiasts, tourists, and locals immersed themselves in the “Latin American Fiesta” carnival, experiencing the energetic rhythms, flavors, and artistic expressions of Latin America.
Held at the Shanghai International Tourism Resort and various locations in Pudong, east China’s Shanghai, the carnival featured passionate samba and tango performances, soulful Latin American melodies, vibrant traditional costume displays, film screenings, and a delectable array of Latin American cuisine. The event offered a rich cultural exchange, strengthening ties between Asia and Latin America.
Under the theme “Path of Courage,” the Belt and Road Film Week highlighted stories that showcase the internal power that drives people to grow. Eighteen films from different countries were screened, presenting diverse landscapes and cultures to the audience.
Notable highlights included the Chilean Western drama “The Settlers,” which received the Media Choice Award for Best Film. Eva Nathena, director of “Murderess,” and Battsooj Uurtsaikh, actor in the film “If Only I Could Hibernate,” were honored with Media Choice Awards for Best Filmmaker. The Chinese film “The Midsummer’s Voice” won the Audience Choice Award, reflecting the local audience’s appreciation for compelling storytelling.
The success of the Latin American Fiesta and the Belt and Road Film Week underscores Shanghai’s role as a hub for international cultural exchange. By bringing together artists, filmmakers, and audiences from around the world, the event fosters mutual understanding and celebrates the rich tapestry of global cultures.
