Shanghai Celebrates ‘Haipai’ Art with Exhibition of Yue Zhenwen and Zhang Chi

‘Haipai’ Artistry Celebrated in Shanghai Exhibition

On June 15, the Shanghai Haipai Art Museum unveiled a remarkable exhibition featuring the works of renowned ‘Haipai’ artists and married couple, Yue Zhenwen and Zhang Chi. The exhibition showcases 108 representative pieces from various periods of their illustrious careers, highlighting the evolution of their artistic journey.

The term ‘Haipai’ refers to a unique cultural phenomenon that originated in Shanghai. This movement blends the traditional culture of southern China with modern industrial influences that were imported from the West when Shanghai emerged as a significant international trading port. The fusion of these elements has given rise to a distinctive artistic style that reflects both heritage and innovation.

Notably, two-thirds of the displayed works are new creations, offering visitors a contemporary panorama of Chinese landscape painting. These recent pieces demonstrate the artists’ ongoing exploration of themes and techniques, contributing to the dynamic landscape of modern Chinese art.

The exhibition provides an unparalleled opportunity for art enthusiasts, scholars, and the general public to immerse themselves in the evolving artistry of Yue Zhenwen and Zhang Chi. It remains open to the public until July 7 at the Shanghai Haipai Art Museum.
