The Dragon Boat Festival, a cherished traditional Chinese celebration, crossed continents to be warmly embraced in the American heartland. On June 10, Sarah Lande, a long-time friend of China residing in Iowa, opened her home to Chinese and American guests for a festive gathering that highlighted the rich tapestry of Chinese culture.
Lande’s home became a cultural bridge as friends from both nations came together to taste traditional Chinese delicacies and participate in customs associated with the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival. The festival, observed on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, coincided this year with the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.
In a letter addressed to Lande, Shen Haixiong, President of China Media Group (CMG), extended his heartfelt appreciation for her efforts in fostering mutual understanding. “The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese festival. Different forms of activities are held around the world to celebrate the event, which helps people around the world experience the charm of the Chinese culture,” Shen wrote.
Shen expressed CMG’s willingness to collaborate with Lande and other American friends to deepen the bonds between Chinese and American peoples. Representatives from CMG and the Chinese Consulate-General in Chicago were present at the event, further underscoring the significance of cultural exchange in strengthening international ties.
The celebration at Lande’s home not only offered a taste of traditional Chinese cuisine but also provided an immersive experience of Chinese traditions for the local community. Attendees engaged in storytelling, shared experiences, and enjoyed the festive atmosphere that symbolizes unity and friendship.
This cross-cultural event reflects the growing interest and appreciation for Asian cultural festivals in the United States. By bringing the Dragon Boat Festival to Iowa, Lande and her guests exemplified how cultural celebrations can transcend borders and foster global friendships.
