Chinese Expatriates Bring Ancient Baduanjin Practice to London in Traditional Hanfu

Two Chinese expatriates in London are sharing the ancient art of Baduanjin with locals, all while wearing traditional hanfu attire. Their efforts are bringing a touch of Chinese culture to the streets of the UK capital, promoting intercultural exchange and wellness.

Baduanjin, which translates to “Eight Pieces of Brocade,” is a traditional Chinese exercise consisting of eight sections of gentle movements designed to enhance physical health and well-being. Dating back over 800 years to the Northern Song Dynasty, it is renowned for its simplicity and effectiveness in promoting flexibility, balance, and vitality.

The two practitioners, dressed in the elegant flowing robes of hanfu—the traditional clothing of the Han Chinese—have been conducting open classes in London’s parks. Their presence has not only intrigued passersby but also encouraged participation from individuals eager to learn about Chinese culture and practices.

“Sharing Baduanjin with people here has been a wonderful experience,” said one of the expatriates. “It’s not just about physical exercise; it’s about sharing a piece of our heritage and fostering understanding between cultures.”

Hanfu, characterized by its long sleeves and flowing lines, symbolizes the rich history of China’s majority ethnic group. By wearing hanfu during the exercises, the practitioners aim to provide a holistic cultural experience.

Local residents have responded positively. “It’s fascinating to see and participate in something so different,” said a Londoner who joined a session. “Learning Baduanjin has been both relaxing and enlightening.”

The initiative reflects a growing trend of cultural exchange and the global interest in traditional wellness practices. As more people seek holistic approaches to health, ancient exercises like Baduanjin are finding new audiences around the world.
