UN Alliance Welcomes China-Proposed International Day for Dialogue

The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) has welcomed the adoption of a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly establishing June 10 as the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations. The resolution, proposed by China, was unanimously adopted during the 78th session of the General Assembly on Friday.

Miguel Ángel Moratinos, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the UNAOC, expressed his support for the resolution, stating, “I welcome the adoption of the General Assembly resolution ‘International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.'” He extended his gratitude to China and all member states for their appreciation of the UNAOC’s role in promoting understanding and respect among civilizations, cultures, religions, and beliefs.

Moratinos emphasized the importance of dialogue in today’s world, calling on the global community to “celebrate our diversity,” “recommit to respect our differences,” and “protect human dignity, indiscriminately.” He highlighted the value of the UNAOC Global Forums as a platform for dialogue among state and non-state actors, including civil society organizations, religious leaders, youth, media, artists, and athletes.

The resolution acknowledges that all civilizational achievements are “the collective heritage of humankind.” It advocates for respecting the diversity of civilizations and emphasizes “the crucial role of dialogue” in maintaining world peace, promoting common development, enhancing human well-being, and achieving collective progress.

The establishment of the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations reflects a commitment by UN member states to foster mutual understanding and cooperation. It aims to encourage nations and peoples to engage in open dialogue, bridge cultural divides, and work collaboratively towards shared goals.

China’s initiative in proposing the resolution underscores its role in promoting global harmony and cooperation. By advocating for an international day dedicated to dialogue, China emphasizes the importance of recognizing cultural diversity as a strength and a foundation for peaceful coexistence.

The first International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations will be observed on June 10, 2024, offering an opportunity for individuals and organizations worldwide to participate in events and activities that promote dialogue and understanding across cultures.
