The waters of Tongren City in Guizhou Province came alive this week as over 160 dragon boats took to the river in a breathtaking display of tradition and community spirit. Spectators lined the banks, eager to witness the grand spectacle leading up to the Duanwu Festival, which falls on June 10 this year.
The air was filled with the rhythmic beat of drums, the splash of oars, and the cheers of enthusiastic crowds. The vibrant scene showcased not only the athletic prowess of the rowers but also the rich cultural heritage of the region.
In 2009, the Bijiang District of Tongren City was honored with the title “Hometown of Traditional Dragon Boats in China.” By 2011, Bijiang’s dragon boat racing was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage. The district has since hosted 13 national dragon boat competitions, further cementing its status as a centerpiece of this ancient tradition.
The Duanwu Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, is celebrated annually to commemorate the life and death of the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan. The festival brings communities together in a vibrant mix of history, sport, and celebration.
This year’s event not only highlights the enduring appeal of dragon boat racing but also shines a light on Tongren’s commitment to preserving cultural traditions while engaging new generations in the festivities.
