In December 2018, marking its 20th anniversary, Shanghai Book City announced impressive milestones: over 116 million books sold, generating sales exceeding 3 billion yuan. These figures not only reflect its commercial success but also its significant role in promoting literacy and culture in the region.
After nearly two years of extensive upgrades and renovations, Shanghai Book City reopened its doors in October 2023. The revamped bookstore has transformed into a modern cultural landmark, embracing a smart green concept that aligns with sustainable urban development.
Beyond being a haven for readers, the new Shanghai Book City now serves as a vibrant cultural hub. It hosts a variety of events, including film exhibitions, comic book expos, photography exhibitions, and fashion shows. This year, Shanghai Book City has been selected as one of the public screening venues for the Shanghai TV Festival. From June 24 to 28, residents will have the opportunity to enjoy both international and domestic works in a local cultural space, and engage directly with global filmmakers.
The Shanghai International Film Festival and the Shanghai TV Festival are set to be held in June, from the 14th to the 23rd and the 24th to the 28th, respectively. Shanghai Book City’s participation underscores its growing significance as a cultural center in the city.
