Record 13.42 Million Students Register for China’s 2024 Gaokao Exam
The gaokao, China’s rigorous national college entrance examination, has seen a record-breaking registration of 13.42 million students for the 2024 session, according to the Ministry of Education’s announcement on Friday. This figure marks an increase of 510,000 candidates compared to last year, highlighting the growing competition among Chinese students seeking higher education opportunities.
In anticipation of the massive turnout, educational authorities across the country have implemented comprehensive measures to ensure a smooth and fair examination process. The ministry emphasized coordinated efforts to enhance services for candidates, focusing on critical areas such as transportation, accommodation, medical care, and maintaining quiet environments during the exam period.
Special attention has been given to students with disabilities and other special needs. Authorities have made provisions including the creation of Braille exam papers for 15 visually impaired candidates across 11 provincial-level regions. Additionally, support services have been extended to over 11,000 candidates with disabilities, ensuring they receive the necessary accommodations to participate fully in the examination.
The gaokao, scheduled for early June 2024, is often regarded as one of the most significant events in a Chinese student’s academic journey. The outcomes of this rigorous exam can determine university placements and future career paths, adding to the pressure on students and their families. The record number of registrants this year underscores the importance placed on education in China and the aspirations of millions of young people aiming to secure a brighter future through higher education.
