Zambian President Calls for Universal Education Ahead of Africa Day

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has called on African nations to make education accessible to all citizens, emphasizing its role as the “greatest equalizer” in society. Speaking on Friday, the eve of Africa Day, President Hichilema highlighted the importance of investing in resilient education systems as a cornerstone for the continent’s development.

“As we celebrate Africa Freedom Day, let us celebrate the power of education in transforming lives and building a better Zambia, better Africa, and indeed a better world,” Hichilema stated. He urged for a collective commitment to ensuring inclusive, quality learning for all, aligning with this year’s Africa Day theme.

Africa Day, observed annually on May 25, commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity in 1963, now known as the African Union (AU). This year’s theme, “Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa,” places education and skills development at the center of the continent’s social transformation agenda.

President Hichilema noted that the theme resonates with Zambia’s policy direction. “Africa is making sustained investments in higher education, science, technology, research, and innovation,” he said. “Zambia is implementing measures to promote increased access to inclusive, long-lasting, and relevant learning.”

He also emphasized the importance of honoring the sacrifices of the continent’s forebearers who fought for liberation. “Africa Freedom Day should be commemorated to honor the courageous forefathers and mothers for their sacrifice as they fought for the continent’s liberation and celebrate the progress and commitment to the ideals of pan-Africanism,” Hichilema added.

The call for universal education echoes a broader global commitment to educational development, recognizing education’s pivotal role in advancing economic growth, reducing inequality, and fostering social cohesion.
