Across the globe, more than 30 million foreigners are currently learning Chinese, and about 200 million have learned the language. In Hungary, a growing number of young people are immersing themselves in Chinese culture, driven by diverse motivations ranging from personal interest to professional aspirations.
Flóra Tóth, an undergraduate at the University of Miskolc in northeastern Hungary, shared her story. “I have been fascinated with Chinese culture since I was young,” she told CGTN. Flóra began learning Chinese to delve deeper into the ancient traditions and philosophies that captivated her imagination.
For many Hungarian youths, the ability to speak or even write Chinese not only feels cool but also opens doors to new experiences. Some are drawn by the allure of traveling to China, eager to explore its rich history and landmarks firsthand. Others see learning Chinese as a pathway to career opportunities, especially with the presence of Chinese companies in Hungary expanding in recent years.
The Confucius Institutes across Hungary play a significant role in promoting Chinese language and culture. They offer courses, cultural events, and exchange programs that help bridge the gap between the two countries. Students participate in activities like calligraphy workshops, traditional music classes, and festivities celebrating Chinese holidays.
Moreover, bilateral relations between Hungary and China have strengthened, leading to increased educational and business collaborations. Hungarian students are taking advantage of scholarships to study in China, while Chinese businesses are investing in Hungary, creating a demand for bilingual professionals.
This cultural exchange enriches both societies, fostering mutual understanding and respect. As young Hungarians continue to embrace Chinese culture, they become ambassadors of cross-cultural connectivity in an increasingly globalized world.
