Frequent visits to The Paramount inspired him to form a jazz band composed entirely of Chinese musicians—a pioneering dream at the time.
In 1947, seizing an opportunity presented by The Paramount’s owner, Jimmy King assembled the first all-Chinese jazz band, the Jimmy King Band. Among its members was Zheng Deren, who would later be celebrated as China’s master of the double bass. Zheng’s exceptional talent and contributions to musical arrangements played a significant role in the band’s success.
The Jimmy King Band not only entertained but also broke cultural barriers, blending Western jazz elements with Chinese musical traditions.
