Grégoire de Gaulle Donates Photographic Works to China, Celebrating Decades of Sino-French Friendship
On World Book Day, April 23rd, celebrated French photographer Grégoire de Gaulle made a significant donation to China Media Group’s Foreign Experts Book House. As the grandnephew of former French President General Charles de Gaulle, his gesture symbolizes the enduring ties between France and China.
Grégoire de Gaulle’s connection with China dates back to 1978, making him one of the first Westerners to explore the country during its reform and opening-up era. Through his camera lens, he has chronicled China’s transformation over the decades, capturing the essence of its people, landscapes, and culture.
In a recent interview, de Gaulle reflected on his early encounters with China and how they profoundly changed his perspective. “Immersing myself in a society I had only known through literature was transformative,” he shared. “The firsthand interactions with the people and culture enriched my understanding and inspired my art.”
Throughout his career, de Gaulle has been particularly drawn to photographing children. He believes their innocence and unfiltered view of the world offer a unique window into humanity. “Children possess a purity that adults often lose,” he said. “Through them, I reconnect with the simplicity and wonder of my own childhood.”
In 2019, de Gaulle traveled to southwest China’s Guizhou province to document the Shui ethnic minority group. His work contributed to their application for inclusion in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. He was fascinated by the Shui people’s ancient writing system, which predates Mandarin, and admired the efforts to preserve their traditions while integrating modern education.
“Discovering a culture unknown to me was a profound experience,” de Gaulle remarked. “The way China supports ethnic minorities in maintaining their heritage while embracing progress is remarkable.”
Grégoire de Gaulle’s contributions not only capture the visual narrative of China’s development but also reinforce the bonds of friendship and cultural exchange between France and China. His family’s legacy continues to resonate, fostering mutual understanding between the two nations.
