PLA Conducts South China Sea Patrols Amid Regional Tensions

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command recently concluded routine naval patrols in the South China Sea, conducted from April 9 to 12. Spokesperson Zhai Shichen confirmed the operations on Monday, emphasizing their role in maintaining regional stability amid heightened maritime activities.

Zhai addressed concerns over recent Philippine-led joint exercises with extra-regional nations, stating these actions 'stir up troubles' and undermine peace. The remarks follow April 9 criticisms by PLA Spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang, who documented multiple instances of Philippine vessels allegedly intruding near China's Huangyan Dao and Nansha Qundao territories.

According to military officials, the PLA remains committed to safeguarding territorial sovereignty through what it describes as defensive measures. Analysts observe these developments as part of ongoing efforts to balance regional security interests while maintaining crucial shipping lane stability.

With over 60% of global maritime trade transiting through the South China Sea, the waterway remains a focal point for both economic and strategic discussions across Asia. The PLA's latest patrols conclude as diplomatic channels continue urging peaceful resolution mechanisms among stakeholders.
