Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang will embark on a three-day diplomatic mission to Turkmenistan starting April 15, 2026, as part of Beijing's efforts to deepen energy cooperation with Central Asian partners. The visit comes at a critical time as global energy markets undergo significant realignment.
As President Xi Jinping's Special Representative, Ding will attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the fourth phase of Turkmenistan's Galkynysh gas field development – currently the world's second-largest natural gas field. This project represents a cornerstone of China's Belt and Road energy partnerships, with existing phases already supplying gas to the Chinese mainland through the Central Asia-China pipeline network.
The visit will also feature the seventh meeting of the China-Turkmenistan Intergovernmental Cooperation Committee, which Ding will co-chair. Analysts anticipate discussions will address:
- Expansion of cross-border energy infrastructure
- New technology partnerships in sustainable extraction
- Coordination on regional security challenges
This diplomatic engagement follows Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedow's visit to Beijing in 2025, where both nations pledged to elevate their comprehensive strategic partnership. Energy trade between the two countries reached $12.8 billion in 2025, accounting for 83% of Turkmenistan's total exports.
