Hainan’s Yangpu Port Sees 94% Surge in Q1 Container Throughput

Yangpu Port, a strategic hub for the Hainan Free Trade Port, reported handling 983,700 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) during the first quarter of 2026 – a staggering 94.37% year-on-year increase. The growth in foreign trade containers outpaced overall expansion, soaring 199% compared to the same period last year, according to data released by the Yangpu Transport and Port Authority on April 12.

This remarkable performance positions the port as a critical engine for regional economic development. With 65 active domestic and international shipping routes, Yangpu has established itself as a vital link in global supply chains, particularly for businesses leveraging Hainan's free trade policies. The port's enhanced connectivity now spans major Asian markets and extends to key commercial partners in Europe and Southeast Asia.

Analysts attribute the growth to several factors including streamlined customs procedures, increased manufacturing activity in the Greater Bay Area, and rising demand for transshipment services. As the Hainan Free Trade Port continues to implement innovative trade facilitation measures, Yangpu's strategic importance is expected to grow further throughout 2026.
