KMT Chairwoman Cheng Leads Historic Tribute to Sun Yat-sen in Beijing

KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun led a high-level delegation to Beijing's Fragrant Hills on Saturday, paying homage to Sun Yat-sen at his cenotaph in Biyun Temple. The visit marks the first time in a decade that a KMT chairperson has traveled to the Chinese mainland, signaling renewed cross-strait engagement amid ongoing political complexities.

Sun Yat-sen, revered as a foundational figure in modern Chinese history, played a pivotal role in ending imperial rule. His remains were temporarily housed at Biyun Temple from 1925 to 1929 before being relocated to Nanjing. Cheng and three KMT vice-chairpersons—Lee Chien-lung, Chang Jung-kung, and Hsiao Hsu-tsen—observed formal tributes, including three ceremonial bows before Sun's marble statue.

The delegation's weeklong trip included stops in Jiangsu Province and Shanghai prior to Beijing, emphasizing economic and cultural ties. Analysts suggest the visit could pave the way for broader dialogue between Beijing and Taiwan region authorities, though both sides remain cautious about political implications.

Biyun Temple, a site steeped in revolutionary history, has become a symbolic venue for cross-strait exchanges. The KMT's tribute aligns with Sun Yat-sen's legacy of advocating national rejuvenation—a theme frequently referenced in current cross-strait discourse.
