China Launches Satellite with Sea-Based Smart Dragon-3 Rocket

China successfully launched a Smart Dragon-3 (SD-3) commercial rocket from a sea-based platform off Yangjiang in Guangdong Province on Saturday, marking another milestone in its expanding aerospace capabilities. The mission, conducted by the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, deployed a satellite internet technology test payload into its preset orbit, underscoring advancements in China's commercial space sector.

The SD-3 rocket, developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), is designed for cost-effective launches of satellites into sun-synchronous and low-Earth orbits. With a four-stage solid-propellant configuration, it can carry payloads of up to 1,500 kilograms to a 500-kilometer sun-synchronous orbit, positioning it as a competitive player in the global commercial launch market.

This launch represents the 11th flight of the Smart Dragon-3 series, reflecting China's growing emphasis on commercial space ventures. Sea-based launches offer strategic advantages, including reduced risks for populated areas and flexibility in orbital inclinations, which are critical for satellite internet constellations and Earth observation systems.

Analysts note that the mission aligns with broader efforts to enhance China's satellite infrastructure, supporting sectors such as telecommunications, environmental monitoring, and global connectivity initiatives.
