All Aboard the Movie Magic Express: High-Speed Rail Connects Shanghai to China’s ‘Hollywood’

Hengdian World Studios, Asia's largest film production complex, is riding a new wave of cultural tourism as travelers flock to its movie-themed high-speed trains and immersive sets. The attraction's popularity aligns with China's expanded visa-free policies, which have boosted international visitor numbers by 34% this year compared to pre-pandemic levels.

KhabarAsia joined international tourists on the newly launched cinematic rail experience from Shanghai. The bullet train features carriages themed after classic Chinese films, interactive actor performances, and augmented reality windows showcasing Hengdian's iconic replica landscapes – from imperial palaces to 1930s Shanghai streets.

"This isn't just transportation – it's the first act of the adventure," said Malaysian tourist Li Wei, among 200 passengers on our journey. The experience reflects China's broader strategy to integrate cultural heritage with modern tourism infrastructure, creating what industry analysts predict will become a $28 billion film tourism market by 2027.

For business professionals, Hengdian's growth signals opportunities in themed hospitality and entertainment tech. Meanwhile, diaspora visitors appreciate accessible connections to China's cultural landmarks. With 20 new international flight routes added to nearby cities this month, regional authorities aim to position the area as both production hub and global destination.
