Xi Jinping, KMT Leader Cheng Li-wun Discuss Cross-Strait Ties in Beijing Meeting

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Cheng Li-wun, leader of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT), in Beijing on Friday, marking the highest-level cross-strait political engagement this year. The discussion focused on enhancing economic cooperation and maintaining stability across the Taiwan Strait amid evolving regional dynamics.

Xi, who serves as general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the importance of peaceful development in cross-strait relations. "We must prioritize the well-being of compatriots on both sides," he stated, highlighting potential collaboration in technology and green energy sectors.

Cheng, leading the KMT delegation, acknowledged the "historical responsibility" to promote dialogue, while reaffirming the party's commitment to the 1992 Consensus. The meeting comes as businesses in the Taiwan region increase investments in the Chinese mainland's semiconductor supply chains.

Analysts suggest this interaction could influence upcoming economic forums in Asia, particularly as APEC members prepare for November's Leaders' Meeting in Seoul. The dialogue notably occurred without participation from Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party, which maintains a more skeptical stance on cross-strait exchanges.
