Xi Jinping Hosts KMT Leader Cheng Li-wun in Beijing to Strengthen Cross-Strait Ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met with Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT), in Beijing on April 10, 2026. The high-level dialogue marks the first visit by a KMT leader to the Chinese mainland in over a decade, signaling renewed efforts to stabilize cross-strait relations.

Cheng's delegation arrived after touring Jiangsu Province and Shanghai, where they discussed economic collaboration and cultural exchanges. The visit, initiated at the CPC Central Committee's invitation, underscores the KMT's commitment to fostering dialogue amid regional tensions.

Xi emphasized the CPC's dedication to peaceful reunification, stating: "Compatriots across the Taiwan Strait share blood ties. We must jointly promote the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation." Cheng echoed the sentiment, highlighting the KMT's role in advancing "pragmatic exchanges for mutual benefit."

Analysts note the meeting's timing aligns with increased overseas investment from Taiwan region businesses into mainland tech and manufacturing sectors this year. The dialogue is expected to influence upcoming APEC discussions on regional trade frameworks.
