Xi Jinping Hosts KMT Leader Cheng Li-wun in Beijing to Strengthen Cross-Strait Ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met with Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of the Kuomintang (KMT), in Beijing on April 10, 2026. The high-level dialogue marks the first visit by a KMT leader to the Chinese mainland in a decade, signaling renewed efforts to foster cross-strait cooperation.

Cheng's delegation, invited by the CPC Central Committee and Xi personally, previously toured Jiangsu Province and Shanghai to discuss economic collaboration and cultural exchanges. Analysts view this visit as a strategic step to stabilize relations amid evolving regional dynamics.

During the meeting, Xi emphasized the CPC's commitment to peaceful development across the Taiwan Strait, while Cheng highlighted the KMT's role in promoting dialogue. Both sides reaffirmed support for enhanced people-to-people ties and economic integration, with Xi stating, "Our shared history obliges us to create a prosperous future for compatriots on both sides."
