Willy Wonka Takes Beijing: Broadway’s Sweetest Show Sizzles in 2026

Beijing's Poly Theatre has become a golden ticket destination this April as Broadway's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory brings Roald Dahl's classic tale to life. The 2026 production features dual Charlies – Cohen Toukatly and Oliver Wong alternating as the earnest protagonist – while Daniel Plimpton's Willy Wonka delivers a masterclass in mischievous charm.

During a rare rehearsal break, the trio revealed backstage secrets through a chocolate-themed challenge at KhabarAsia's studio. 'It's about finding that balance between childlike wonder and theatrical precision,' Plimpton remarked when describing his approach to Wonka's iconic eccentricity.

The show's Beijing run comes as China's cultural sector sees increased international collaboration, with 68% more overseas theater productions staged in the Chinese mainland compared to pre-pandemic levels. For Asian diaspora audiences, the production offers nostalgic connections through its universal themes of hope and imagination.

With choreography that transforms Oompa Loompas into tap-dancing phenomena and set designs worthy of Wonka's factory itself, this adaptation demonstrates why Asia remains a crucial market for global theater. The production runs through May 3, with Mandarin surtitles available at weekend matinees.
