China’s 42nd Antarctic expedition concluded this week as the research icebreaker Xuelong began its return voyage on April 9, 2026, marking the end of a mission that set new benchmarks in polar exploration. Organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources, the expedition involved unprecedented personnel numbers, logistical support, and scientific objectives, solidifying China’s role in advancing global Antarctic research.
The twin icebreakers Xuelong and Xuelong 2 initially departed Shanghai on November 1, 2025, embarking on separate but complementary missions. While Xuelong has completed its tasks and is en route home, Xuelong 2 remains in Antarctica’s Prydz Bay, conducting a joint ocean ecosystem survey. It is expected to return to Shanghai by late May.
This year’s expedition highlights China’s growing capabilities in polar logistics and technology, with officials emphasizing its contributions to climate science and ecological preservation. The Ministry of Natural Resources stated the mission’s findings will enhance understanding of Antarctic ice dynamics and marine biodiversity, critical for global environmental strategies.
