China has called for immediate de-escalation in the Middle East following Israel’s large-scale airstrikes in Lebanon, which killed dozens and prompted Lebanon to declare April 9, 2026, a national day of mourning. The strikes, targeting over 100 sites within 10 minutes on Wednesday, have drawn sharp criticism from Iran and heightened fears of a broader regional conflict.
At a press briefing on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that “Lebanon’s sovereignty and security must be respected,” urging all parties to exercise restraint. Iran condemned the attacks as a violation of ceasefire agreements and announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint for global oil trade.
Mao reiterated China’s consistent stance on resolving disputes through political dialogue, stating, “The lives and property of civilians must be protected, and differences should be addressed through consultation.” She reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to supporting peace efforts in the Gulf region and fostering long-term stability.
The escalation comes amid heightened global scrutiny of Middle East security dynamics. Analysts warn that prolonged tensions could disrupt energy markets and destabilize neighboring economies. China, a key diplomatic player in the region, has positioned itself as a neutral mediator, advocating for multilateral solutions under international frameworks.
