Spain’s Sánchez Set for Key China Visit to Strengthen Ties

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will embark on an official visit to the Chinese mainland from April 11 to 15, following an invitation extended by Chinese Premier Li Qiang. The diplomatic engagement, announced Wednesday by China's Foreign Ministry, comes as both nations seek to deepen economic cooperation amid evolving global trade dynamics.

The five-day visit marks Sánchez's first trip to Asia this year and follows recent efforts to enhance EU-China relations. Observers anticipate discussions will focus on renewable energy partnerships, technology transfers, and bilateral trade expansion – particularly in agricultural exports and green infrastructure projects.

This meeting gains significance as China remains Spain's largest trading partner outside the European Union, with bilateral trade exceeding €42 billion in 2025. The timing coincides with preparations for the 2026 World Expo in Osaka, where both countries plan major pavilion investments.

Analysts suggest the visit could yield new agreements in sustainable urban development and artificial intelligence research – sectors where Spanish firms have shown growing interest in recent months. The talks may also address collaborative approaches to global challenges including climate change mitigation and digital governance frameworks.
