The Chinese mainland has renewed its commitment to fostering peaceful cross-strait relations as a Kuomintang (KMT) delegation conducts its first high-level mainland visit in ten years. Spokesperson Zhu Fenglian of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office stated Wednesday that Beijing remains willing to collaborate with 'political parties, groups, and individuals in Taiwan' under the 1992 Consensus framework.
The delegation led by KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday, beginning a six-day tour spanning Jiangsu Province, Shanghai, and Beijing. This marks the most significant cross-strait political engagement since 2016, occurring amid heightened regional tensions.
'Both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China,' Zhu emphasized during a press briefing. 'We possess the wisdom and capability to resolve our own issues through consultation among compatriots.' The remarks came as the delegation prepared for meetings with mainland officials focused on economic cooperation and cultural exchanges.
Analysts suggest the visit could reinvigorate cross-strait dialogue mechanisms that stalled in recent years. The 1992 Consensus – which acknowledges there's only one China while allowing differing interpretations – remains Beijing's prerequisite for official engagements with Taiwan-based political groups.
Business leaders are closely watching the talks, particularly regarding potential measures to ease trade barriers. Cross-strait trade reached $326 billion in 2025, according to mainland customs data, underscoring the region's economic interdependence.
