KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun has embarked on a landmark visit to the Chinese mainland, marking the first such trip by a Kuomintang leader in a decade. Arriving in Shanghai on April 8, 2026, Cheng was greeted by Song Tao of the CPC Central Committee's Taiwan Work Office, with both sides reaffirming commitments to peaceful cross-strait development amid heightened tensions under Taiwan's current DPP authorities.
Rebuilding Bridges Through History
Cheng's itinerary includes symbolic stops in Nanjing – a city embodying shared historical memories – and Beijing, where high-level discussions will focus on reviving dialogue mechanisms based on the 1992 Consensus. Analysts view this as a direct response to Taiwan residents' growing concerns over economic stagnation and restricted cross-strait exchanges since 2016.
Economic Imperatives Drive Engagement
With Taiwan's agricultural exports plummeting 21.5% since 2021, Cheng's delegation aims to secure mainland market access for key industries. Central China Normal University researcher Peng Tao notes: "This visit addresses urgent needs – from fishery product sales to tourism revival – while creating structured platforms for non-governmental exchanges."
The trip follows preparatory meetings including February's cross-strait think tank forum in Beijing. As retired Taiwan lieutenant general Herman Shuai observes: "Like Lien Chan's 2005 ice-breaking journey, this could reignite economic synergies while countering separatist rhetoric."
