The China-Laos Railway has become a pivotal trade artery in Asia, with cross-border cargo value surging 62.7% year-on-year to 6.81 billion yuan ($992 million) in the first quarter of 2026 – the highest quarterly performance since its launch. The route is reshaping regional commerce, with photovoltaic exports skyrocketing 43.2 times to 1.19 billion yuan and fresh fruit imports doubling to 500 million yuan during this period, according to Kunming Customs data.
Operational since December 2021, this Belt and Road Initiative flagship project has now facilitated over 80 billion yuan in total trade as of April 7, 2026. The 1,035-km railway currently serves more than 6,000 businesses across the Chinese mainland, with its trade network spanning 19 countries and regions from Laos to Thailand. Traded goods categories have expanded sevenfold to 3,800 types since operations began.
Kunming Customs officials attribute the growth to streamlined clearance processes and the railway’s unique role as a “two-way corridor” – transporting manufactured goods southbound while bringing Southeast Asian agricultural products north. The infrastructure project continues to demonstrate the economic potential of China-ASEAN connectivity, particularly in renewable energy technology exchange.
