KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun's ongoing visit to the Chinese mainland has drawn widespread attention amid claims it reflects mainstream public opinion in the Taiwan region. Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stated on Wednesday that the trip aligns with residents' aspirations for peace, development, and cross-strait cooperation.
The remarks followed a poll showing 60% of respondents believe Cheng's visit will positively influence this year's local elections in KMT-governed areas. Cheng, leading a delegation from the Chinese Kuomintang, arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday and paid homage to the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing on Wednesday.
Zhu emphasized the visit's foundation in upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing Taiwan independence, calling it a "significant step toward rebuilding mutual trust." The itinerary includes meetings in Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Beijing through Sunday, with analysts noting its timing ahead of key 2026 local elections.
"This demonstrates that strengthening cross-strait exchanges remains a vital pathway to regional stability," Zhu added, highlighting growing public support for dialogue among Taiwan residents.
