KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun Begins Landmark Mainland Visit to Bolster Cross-Strait Ties

KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday, commencing a six-day mainland visit that marks the first high-level cross-strait political engagement in a decade. The delegation's itinerary includes meetings in Jiangsu Province, Shanghai, and Beijing through Sunday, following an official invitation from the Communist Party of China Central Committee and its General Secretary Xi Jinping.

At a welcoming ceremony in Shanghai, Taiwan Work Office Director Song Tao emphasized the visit's significance: "By prioritizing the Chinese nation's fundamental interests and people's welfare, our parties must jointly advance peaceful cross-strait development." Cheng responded by reaffirming the KMT's commitment to the 1992 Consensus, stating the visit aims to "safeguard peace across the Taiwan Strait" amid current geopolitical tensions.

The trip revives formal party-to-party dialogue suspended since 2016, with analysts noting its timing coincides with increased regional security concerns. Historical context remains pivotal – while the CPC and KMT fought a civil war concluding in 1949, both maintain that Taiwan remains an inseparable part of China's territory.

Cheng's itinerary includes symbolic stops in Nanjing, where she paid respects at Sun Yat-sen's mausoleum, acknowledging shared revolutionary heritage. The chairwoman, elected in October 2025, has consistently advocated for enhanced cross-strait exchanges, telling Taipei reporters before departure that her mission aligns with Taiwan residents' desire for stability.

International observers will closely monitor outcomes from the Beijing meetings, particularly regarding economic cooperation frameworks and crisis communication mechanisms. The visit occurs as cross-strait trade volumes reached $326 billion in 2025, underscoring deepening economic interdependence despite political complexities.
