KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun Begins Landmark Mainland Visit to Bolster Cross-Strait Ties

Kuomintang (KMT) Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday, commencing a six-day mainland visit that marks the first cross-strait leadership exchange in a decade. The delegation's itinerary includes meetings in Jiangsu Province, Shanghai, and Beijing, with observers calling it a critical step in revitalizing dialogue between the KMT and the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Rebuilding Bridges Through Dialogue

This visit follows Cheng's October 2025 election as KMT leader, during which she consistently advocated for renewed mainland engagement. "For regional stability and our children's future, we must choose peace," Cheng stated at a Taipei press conference before departure, emphasizing adherence to the 1992 Consensus that upholds the one-China principle.

A State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson noted: "Strengthened party-level exchanges serve as ballast for Taiwan Strait stability." The trip echoes previous confidence-building visits by former KMT leaders Lien Chan and Ma Ying-jeou.

Historical Context and Contemporary Significance

The KMT-CPC dialogue revives a complex relationship rooted in China's civil war history. Since the 1949 establishment of the People's Republic, cross-strait interactions have evolved through economic integration and cultural exchanges, despite political differences.

With over $300 billion in annual cross-strait trade and 1 million Taiwan residents living in the mainland, analysts suggest this visit could address practical cooperation areas while reaffirming commitments to peaceful development.
