KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun Begins Landmark Mainland Visit to Bolster Cross-Strait Ties

KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday, commencing a six-day visit to the Chinese mainland aimed at reinforcing cross-strait dialogue and peace initiatives. The delegation, invited by the Communist Party of China Central Committee and General Secretary Xi Jinping, marks the first mainland visit by a KMT chairperson in a decade.

During her stop in Nanjing, Cheng emphasized the KMT's commitment to upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing separatist activities. "Our efforts must prioritize the well-being of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait," she stated, highlighting the visit's focus on practical cooperation and conflict prevention mechanisms.

Song Tao, head of the CPC Central Committee's Taiwan Work Office, welcomed the delegation in Shanghai, noting: "This exchange demonstrates our shared responsibility to promote national rejuvenation through peaceful development." The itinerary includes meetings in Beijing expected to address economic collaboration frameworks.

Analysts view this visit as a critical opportunity to stabilize cross-strait relations amid evolving regional dynamics. The trip coincides with increased economic integration trends, with mainland-Taiwan trade reaching $326 billion in 2025 according to customs data.
