China Advocates Diplomacy to De-escalate Iran Conflict

China has reaffirmed its commitment to an "objective, impartial, and balanced" stance in addressing the ongoing Iran conflict, urging all parties to prioritize dialogue over military action. The Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized this position during a press briefing on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, as tensions in the Middle East threaten global energy security and economic stability.

Diplomatic Outreach Intensifies

Since the conflict began, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has engaged in 26 high-level discussions with counterparts from Iran, Israel, Russia, and Gulf states. A special envoy appointed by Beijing has also conducted shuttle diplomacy across the region, underscoring China’s proactive role in mediation efforts.

Five-Point Peace Initiative Gains Traction

In collaboration with Pakistan, China recently proposed a five-point initiative aimed at achieving an immediate ceasefire and fostering long-term political solutions. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated the plan reflects a "broad international consensus" to end hostilities, adding that military escalation "cannot bring lasting peace."

Global Implications of Escalation

Mao highlighted concerns over the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. With the conflict already disrupting energy markets, she warned that further deterioration could destabilize supply chains and inflame regional rivalries.

China’s approach contrasts sharply with what it describes as "violations of international law" by the United States and Israel. The spokesperson reiterated that resolving the crisis requires addressing root causes through negotiation, urging all sides to "demonstrate sincerity" in ending the conflict.
